There are a variety of Fuselages available for your rocket.

The engine mount exists only to have an engine attached. The regular fuselage segments can fit 3x3x4 small grid items (chutes, cables). More accurately, the fourth layer exists in the boundary between the fuselage segment and its neighbor (another fuselage, an engine mount, or fairing). Fairing segments can also fit the 3x3x4 small grid items, but the elements will protrude through the shell.

The following image and table gives you an incomplete catalog of fuselage types.
